New Year, New Career: What it takes to make the shift

Thank goodness it is 2021, good riddance 2020, what a tough year it has been! With every new year comes our new year’s resolutions.

After this long year of weird and off work schedules, I know a lot of us are starting to think “maybe it is time to switch gears to a new career”. People are feeling burnt out, or like they have too much time to themselves. Many have realized that their job really doesn’t make them happy… What better time is there than a new year to make a change?

Finding a New Career

So, if starting a new career is one of your goals this year, you might be asking yourself, how do I get started? There is no real wrong answer to this as long as you are doing something, forward momentum is better than a rest. However, here are a few ideas to get you started…

You know you want to make a change, but what does that mean? Do you want a different opportunity at your current job or do you want to throw out the 5-year plan and start from scratch?

What Sparks Joy?

It is never a good idea to just jump in when making this big of a decision, it helps to take a minute and research what is best for you. This is where journaling can be a big help. Ask yourself what sparks joy in my life more than anything else, what makes me want to get out of bed in the morning with a purpose?

Find Your Passion

Believe it or not, there are tons of jobs out there for whatever you are passionate about. Are you a huge movie buff who’d love to just spend your days watching movies? There are jobs that allow this! Maybe your kids are what excites you and get you out of bed. Maybe you would enjoy working with other kids? Taking a minute to find out what is one thing that we keep going back to really helps us to know what is the next best step.

Once you have discovered your passion, it is time to do some research.

Ok, so let’s say you are that person who finds nothing more exciting than the latest movie, if you could you would spend all day watching movies, how do you make money doing this? There are a couple of options including editing, writing subtitles, becoming a reviewer, heck even working in a movie theater! Some of these may make you think it would be impossible for you to find a job doing that, but you never know until you try. Find out what type of job sounds the most exciting to you and then do your research. Is the job really as good as it sounds? What is required for that job? Do you meet the requirements? How do you apply? The more you know, the better prepared you will be for that interview!

Don’t Just Dream It, Do It!

Don’t just dream it, do it! If you really want a new career, then make it happen. There are just too many people out there stuck in jobs they hate because they don’t try or they think there is nothing better for them. Frankly, you never know until you try. And maybe you won’t get your dream the first week or the first time you send out your resume, but with perseverance, you can reach that goal of New Year, New Career!
